The Wolfson History Prize

Who are they?

The Wolfson History Prize is an annual book prize ran by the Wolfson Foundation to recognise the best non-fiction history writing being produced in the UK.  Its ‘flagship’ event is the annual award reception for the Wolfson History Prize.

The Challenge

The Wolfson History Prize sat as a link on the main navigation of the Wolfson Foundation website with no identity of its own. It consisted of a copy based dated design, lacked any creativity and visual interaction and was not representative of the brand.

With the volume of content covering over 40 years of Prize winners, the long text pages were not engaging the audience.

Like the Wolfson Foundation website, these pages were also not fully responsive across mobile, tablet and desktop and staff had minimal training on their current CMS making each years new shortlisted books and winners difficult to be added.

They wanted a robust system that would be easy to use and well supported.

The Solution

The website design stemmed from the new Wolfson Foundation website branding and colour schemes, however it is now a website of its own, sitting on its own domain name.

Needing to ensure that content is structured in a visual and engaging way, images of the Prize shortlisted and winning books were used throughout. Each book was placed into a clean white card with relevant book information and linking through to individual book pages. These book pages focused on the author and showcased videos and podcasts where available.

The content setup was an enormous task with 130 pages created showcasing over 40 years of books. The main past winners page was created ensuring each year was easy to find and quick to access.

The responsive website presents attractively to users independent of the device they arrive at the website on.

Keeping accessibility standards as high as possible was as important as the main website requirement, therefore it was implemented as close to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 as possible to ensure delivery of a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of technology or ability.
